Instructor Bio – Doug Swinton

of making a living.”

I’m often surprised by how my life has unfolded. I never
consciously decided to become an artist—but the desire to create
has always been with me. I doodled through math class and
watched my mother paint in our kitchen studio surrounded by her
garden’s bounty.
The dramatic prairie skies and mountain landscapes of Calgary,
where I’ve lived all my life, have long inspired my work. Over
time, painting became more than just an interest—it became a
focused pursuit of creativity, challenge, and joy. The feel of thick paint, the thrill of the first brushstroke, and the satisfaction of a completed piece still make me feel like a kid again.

Today, I’m grateful to make my living through painting, teaching, and running an art supply store.
My work is in public and private collections around the world, and I continue to teach artists of
all levels. But more than anything, I still love learning what it means to live a creative life.
